Understanding the Son of God
A biblical definition of sonship that protects both the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ.
Let Scripture define when the Son was given
Isaiah says a child would be born and a Son would be given. Galatians says God sent forth his Son, made of a woman. Luke connects the title Son of God directly to the miraculous conception.
The one revealed in Jesus is eternal God. But sonship is tied to the incarnation, birth, and redemptive mission in time.
Luke 1:35Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
The Son is genuine humanity
The Son could grow, obey, pray, suffer, die, rise, and mediate because the Son is the real human life of Jesus Christ.
This does not make Jesus merely human. It explains how the eternal God truly entered our condition without ceasing to be God.

The one born is Mighty God
Isaiah does not separate the child from the divine identity. The child born and Son given is called Mighty God and Everlasting Father.
That does not erase the Son's humanity. It tells us who is revealed in that humanity.
Isaiah 9:6Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given... The mighty God, The everlasting Father.
Sonship is redemptive
Through the Son, God obeys where humanity failed, bears our suffering, dies for our sins, rises in victory, mediates for us, and brings every enemy under his feet.
The role reaches its goal, but Jesus Christ does not cease to exist. The risen Lamb remains the visible revelation of God forever.
